2014 Nissan GT-R : Squash Those Rumors

Road and Track Magazines Sam Mitani asked Kazutoshi Mizuno about the rumors that the R35 Nissan GT-R would be replaced in 2013.

“These reports that say we’re planning on producing a new-generation GT-R only five years after introducing the original, and that we’re going to make it a hybrid, are totally unfounded. I said when we introduced the GT-R that the car’s future will be decided in three years, and we are now entering that third year. Therefore, we’ve been too busy making sure that this GT-R makes a positive mark on the world to think about the next car,” he said.
So with that said, expect the R35 Nissan GT-R to be produced for a number of more years. The Nissan Skyline GT-R was produced from 1999-2002 with a very similar driveline, and configuration. With current emissions requirements it is unlikely that we will see the R35 go on that long, but a direct injection engine would bump horsepower, and also likely help out with emissions. The 997 gained about 50 hp going from conventional fuel injection to gasoline direct injection.  Another life cycle extender might be an additional gear in the transmission. Nissan has a bit of experience with the DSG GR6 transmission now, so another gear for both fuel economy and maintaining acceleration is possible.  The bench mark for the Nissan GT-R is going to be the Porsche 911 Turbo. Expect 911 performance, at a significantly lower cost.
The rumors floating around about the possible R36 say it might be based on the Infiniti Essence concept car. That car had a 3.7 liter 432 hp gasoline engine, and a 158 hp electric motor.

Texas Mile Results and Pictures

Several members from the NAGTROC forums took their R35’s and other cars out to the Texas Mile event this last weekend.  The Texas mile is a standing start mile with terminal velocity measured at the end of that mile.

The Texas Mile has grown rapidly since our inaugural event in October 2003. Participants come from all edges of the United States, Canada and Mexico to test themselves and their motorized equipment on the fastest and most challenging 1-mile track in the world. They achieve their top speed in 1-Mile and shut down in a 1/2-Mile. This bi-annual Motorsports Festival is created for performance enthusiast - Welcoming Motorcycles, Performance Street Cars, Race Cars and Land Speed Racers.

AMS took out their 9 second R35, and it ran as quick a 195 mph. They said it was laying over in 5th and 6th gear , and not accelerating as it should have.  Without a roll bar, they were only allowed two passes over 190mph.

The first pass in the GT-R resulted in 195 mph. Martin (driver) came back stating the car was running excessively rich in 5th and 6th gear which pretty much killed any acceleration in those gears. The following day Eric Jones went out to try one more time. With no hardware for tuning adjustments at the track and no way to check for boost leaks we were not optimistic but we thought we would give it one more shot before we packed up for the weekend. The car came out like a bat out of hell, spinning the tires through first and second. It was well on its way to a 200mph pass but again in 6th gear the GT-R ran rich and really hurt its acceleration. That run was clocked at a 193. At this point we were asked not to run again due to a lack of proper safety equipment.

The Jotech GT-R went 193.2 mph, they had a bit of a pucker moment as they lost a rear tire in the process. Also without a roll bar , they could only do two runs.

The quickest R35 GT-R pass of the weekend was the Boost Logic R35 GT-R with a 203.2 mph standing mile pass. Check out the video.

GTR Injector Tuning

John from Akuma Motorsports put up some good information that will help out some people tuning R35 GT-R’s.  Larger injectors change two important parameters, theoretical pulse width and base fuel schedule, if the car is not tuned for the larger injectors correctly, the car will not respond well in AUTO mode, as the transmission uses these values as an input for shifting.

To scale injectors correctly, and subsequently, keep the trans running correctly, he must do the following.
1. Set the Target AFR table to the appropriate values...11.1..11.2...10.9 what ever you want the AFR to target.
2. The tuner must first adjust the FUEL MULTIPLIER(lower the number for a leaner response)...800cc approx -15 -20%
3. The tuner must then watch the AF Trims to see where the AFR Learning values are. We want a lean...115%. At idle and about 95-105% under cruise and under load the fuel curve is close to the BASE FUEL TABLE values. No need to go crazy with boost, just see that it does not drop below the desired target AFR.
4. If you upgraded to a larger MAF, I have seen about a 5%increase through the entire MAF curve is a good start. Keep in mind there is a MAX value at 4.91 Volts that you can not exceed 255...it is a physical limit of the ECU. Keep in mind the stock MAF curves vary for each bank. You may find keeping them a little closer to one another keeps the variation in each bank(AFR) closer...you will have to find out what the intakes/intercooler set up work best with.
5. Start the car and open the FUEL VE Table. In the beginning you will want to use the Trace feature to get a sense of where you are. You will use this table to smooth out the AFR Learning and the Fuel Curve. Cruise is in the 30 -60's, idle 16- 24s', and WOT is in the upper few columns172+. try not to do a Cell by Cell smoothing, rather keep the table rather smooth, 'V' and 'H' are your friends...LOL
6. Do a few VERY light load/boost pulls...no need to go to redline here. See what your AFR and Load-Theor Pulsewidth are doing. If your injectors are bigger than 750cc, your Theo PW will be off.
7. If the AF Learning and the THEO PW are too far off, look out trans and P0700! smile.gif This is where the last step comes in. manipulate the BASE FUEL SCHEDULE value to gain proper resolution in the tables. Reducing the value too far will put you in a worse situation(you would only raise it for smaller injectors than stock). Start with a 10% reduction for 750cc, 15% for 850cc or bigger. See what works best for the car.
Rinse and repeat. ;)
This is how to Properly scale injectors and load. Do not manipulate the Target AFR table to make large changes in the AFR curve. This will take time, but it will work. If you are having trouble, let me know and I will do what I can to help out.

Bad Batch of Engines Sends 309 GT-R’s in For Repair in Europe

 

There has been some buzzing in some of the European forums about a bad batch of VR38DETT engines in vehicles in Europe. The crankshaft bearings in early left hand drive cars have had an issue, and 309 cars are being recalled, engines and all ancillaries replaced, and returned to the owners. The affected vehicles are only in Europe, and this engine replacement does NOT affect the US, Japan, or the UK. 

 

- Nissan has identified a problem with crankshaft bearings in the earliest left-hand drive EU cars.
- There are 309 vehicles affected and the owners of each one is being contacted directly.
- These cars will have their complete engines replaced as well as ancillaries such as turbos and even oil cooler.
- This will occur at three locations which are the HPCs in Sweden and Greece for local markets and a new Amsterdam special facility for all mainland Europe.
- The following markets are NOT affected: US, Japan, UK.

JUN Auto Camshafts for the VR38DETT

JUN Auto famous in Japan, and well known world wide for their Hyper Lemon, yellow and green cars have released some information on their camshafts for the VR38DETT.

The JUN cams come in as the largest intake side thus far at 264 degrees of duration with 10.5mm of lift .The exhaust side duration and lift is the same as the Tomei, and Mines cams at 264 degrees 10.5 mm of lift.  The stock cams are 238 degrees 9.56 mm on the intake, and 248 degrees 9.88 mm on the exhaust.
